Combining code with SEO strategy to build e-commerce sites that actually sell.
Overview
At IDG Online, I wasn't just a coder. I had to think like a marketer. My job was to make sure that every line of code helped the site rank better or sell more.
Challenges
- SEO Invisible: The old codebases were a mess. Search engines couldn't make heads or tails of them.
- Checkout Friction: People were adding items to the cart but leaving when the checkout flow got annoying.
Solution
Technical SEO: I refactored the frontend to use semantic HTML and proper metadata. It sounds basic now, but it made a huge difference back then.
Custom Payment Flows: Use off-the-shelf plugins wasn't enough, so I built custom modules for PayPal integration to make the checkout smoother.
Results
- Traffic: Organic rankings shot up for our key terms.
- Money: By smoothing out the checkout process, we saw a direct increase in completed transactions.
