The Fatal Conceit: The Errors of Socialism

I read Hayek's The Fatal Conceit back in 2025. It broke down how the socialist model actually impacts society, and honestly, the central premise hit me hard.

Hayek makes a surprisingly simple point: the biggest mistake we make is believing we know what is best for thousands or millions of other people. We walk around acting like we are omnipresent and all-knowing. He lays out specifically how these top-down "interventions" — which are almost always sold to us as being for our own good — end up damaging our daily lives.

I keep coming back to this one specific idea from the book. It captures the entire problem with central planning:

"The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design."
